Q&A

Will there be a schedule so we know how many miles to go each week or day or are we just going to report what we've done? April 1 is a Sunday, so our weeks will run from Sunday to Saturday. I’ll put up a call for miles on Saturday morning and you will report in. I hope to have all the miles updated on Sunday afternoon (feel free to check back to correct my math).

As far as a schedule, I don’t have one but there are 13 weeks in our challenge so you will need to get about 8 miles a week on average. In the past, for me, some weeks have been much lower than this and other weeks have been higher.

Can I link to this page?  Yes!  You are welcome to link to this page and invite others to join in.

So if we bike, we count 15 min as a mile, not actual mileage right?  Yes, you are right.  Walking and running counts mile for mile – everything else counts as fifteen minutes for one mile.  This includes yoga, weight-lifting, swimming, biking, etc.

Which program do you use to calculate mileage for walks? I personally use the Sports Tracker App on my phone.  I have also used this site to plan routes. Heather uses Cardio Trainer.  My good friend, Julie A., uses Daily Mile to record her miles.  I have an account there as well – it’s kind of like Facebook for athletes.  You can connect with friends and can leave comments, encouragement and advice.

Can I count half miles?  No.  The goal of this is to push yourself to do a little bit more.  If you find yourself walking two and a half miles, push yourself to go that extra half mile so you can count it for three.  Otherwise, round down and count it as two.  Of course, I am not the mile police, but be honest.  If you do two and a half miles on Monday and two and half miles on Tuesday, count it as four, not five.  You can do it!

If you have any other questions, let me know and I’ll answer!  I’m so excited to do this with all of you!

Any Questions?

I have had a few questions so I thought I would do a post answering any questions you might have.  Leave me any questions in the comments and I’ll get them answered tomorrow morning!

April Challenge

I find that I am more accountable for what I do for exercise when I have to report to someone.  It motivates me to get moving!  A couple of years ago I participated in a 100 Mile Challenge and I loved it.  Something about it pushed me and made me want to go just a little bit farther.  That first challenge, I sprained my ankle shortly after joining and I had to really push the last few weeks to get to 100 miles – but I did it, and it felt really good.
The blog that I used to participate with stopped doing challenges so I hosted a couple through e-mail with friends that were interested and I enjoyed it.  It was a lot of work that way though so I stopped doing it.

Recently, I tried another challenge where we were supposed to keep track of working out as well as other things and I found that it was too much for me to keep track of.
So, I decided to start another 100 Mile Challenge to motivate me to move and maybe to help get you up off the couch too.  This time I decided to make a blog so it is easy for everyone to participate!

Here’s how it works:

·         Each challenge runs for three months (April 1 to June 30)

      ·         Each mile you walk or run equals a mile in the challenge

      ·         Every 15 minutes you spend doing other exercise (biking, yoga, tennis, swimming, etc) counts as one mile in the challenge

      ·         There are NO half miles - push yourself to go that extra half mile or another seven minutes and count it as a mile. You can do it!

Each week, I will put out a call for miles and you will report in the comments how many miles you did that week.  (No, you don’t have to be a blogger to participate – you can comment anonymously, just make sure to leave your name!)   I will add your name and miles to the sidebar.  Be sure to check back to make sure that my math is correct!

Each week, I also hope to post some motivation - something to make us want to move, a favorite healthy recipe, etc.

Let me know if you’re interested and plan on starting with us on April 1, 2012!
